Is a missed call from an unknown number a scam?

Yes. Do not ring back. The call may put you through to a premium-rate line that charges you for every minute.

Arrives by Missed call. Pretends to be: Nobody: it is a trap to make you ring back.

How to spot it

Phone call1Unknown number

Hello, 2we have a job offer for you. Press 1 to find out more.

Example: rebuilt from Ofcom, October 2026: one common call is a recorded voice offering a job, the other a number that rings once and hangs up. We blacked out the dark parts.

  1. A missed call from a number you do not know
  2. A recorded job offer
  3. Other signs to watch for
  4. A number you are asked to ring back
  5. A request for personal details

How it works

Your phone rings for less than a second and shows a missed call. Or a recorded voice offers you a job. If you ring back, you may be put through to a premium-rate line and charged for as long as you stay on. Or someone tries to get your personal details, or a payment.

What to do

  1. Do not ring back. Hang up and do not share any details.

  2. Report the call: text CALL and the number to 7726.

  3. If you have lost money, tell your bank now and report it to Report Fraud (reportfraud.police.uk or 0300 123 2040) with your screenshots; in Scotland, call Police Scotland on 101. If someone is coming to your home to collect money or cards, call 999.
