MessageRoyal Mail

Royal Mail: We could not deliver your parcel. Pay a small fee to book a new delivery.

  1. It arrives among your real messages. The sender's name can be faked: seeing "Royal Mail" proves nothing.
  2. It asks for a small sum. "Pay a small fee": the fee is the bait. What they want is your card details.
  3. It sends you to a link. Do not open it. Check on the Royal Mail website or app, typing the address yourself.

If you were caught out

  1. First, call your bank.

Dial 159, or use the number on the back of your card or in the bank's app. Never the number in the message. Ask them to stop your card and payments: every minute counts.

  2. Then change your passwords.

The ones you typed on the fake site, and your email. If a link made you install an app, delete it.

  3. Then report it.

To Report Fraud, at reportfraud.police.uk or on 0300 123 2040. In Scotland, call Police Scotland on 101. Keep your screenshots: you get a crime reference number, and your bank may ask for it.

  4. Finally, tell us.

Your anonymous story helps us spot the next scam. We do not publish it.

If someone is coming to your home to collect money, cards or jewellery, call 999 now.

Were you caught out, or nearly? Tell us what happened: it helps us spot the next one.

Questions

Are you the police?

No. Fraud Fighters is an independent guide to scams that reach your phone. We will never call you, text you first, or ask you for money, codes or passwords. If someone does so in our name, that is a scam too. To report a crime, use Report Fraud: reportfraud.police.uk or 0300 123 2040.

Will you publish my story?

No. Only we read the stories. On the site we publish guides written by us, with no names, photos or sentences that could identify anyone.

What about the photo I send you?

It is blacked out on your phone before it leaves. We black out your name, bank details, card numbers and email ourselves, and you cover the rest with your finger. Only the covered photo is sent. Leave the scammer's number visible: it is the evidence.

How long do you keep it?

Twelve months, then it deletes itself. We do not record your internet address or your name.

I am embarrassed that I fell for it.

It happens every day to many careful people. These scams are run by professionals and built to work. Telling us is the best way to stop it happening to someone else.

How much does it cost?

Nothing. Reading the guides and sending us your story is free.
